America Makes has awarded $10.5 million to 25 teams as part of a push to standardize how metal 3D printing suppliers get qualified to build parts for the U.S. defense industrial base — a bureaucratic-sounding move that could quietly reshape who gets to print titanium brackets and nickel-superalloy components for military hardware.
The funding flows through America Makes' Joint Additive Qualification for Sustainment – Supplier Qualification program, known as JAQS-SQ, and comes from the Office of the Under Secretary of War's Manufacturing Technology Office (OSW ManTech). The award, announced July 27, 2026, brings the total number of qualified suppliers in the JAQS-SQ network to 31 companies, according to reporting from VoxelMatters.
What JAQS-SQ Actually Does
Metal additive manufacturing has a qualification problem. Two shops running ostensibly identical laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) machines on the same alloy can produce parts with meaningfully different microstructures, porosity levels, and mechanical properties depending on machine calibration, powder handling, and process parameters. The 25 newly funded teams join an existing qualified-supplier roster that America Makes says now totals 31 companies. Among the named participants highlighted in the award coverage are AML3D USA, GKN Aerospace, Nikon AM Synergy, and Norsk Titanium US — a mix that spans a wire-arc additive specialist (AML3D), a longtime aerospace structures and engine-component supplier (GKN), a metal AM systems integrator under the Nikon umbrella (Nikon AM Synergy), and a forged-titanium-via-directed-energy-deposition producer (Norsk Titanium) that has already supplied structural titanium parts for Boeing aircraft programs.
That spread is notable. The Money Behind It
The $10.5 million comes from OSW ManTech, the Pentagon's manufacturing technology office, which has spent more than a decade underwriting America Makes as the flagship Manufacturing USA institute for additive manufacturing. The funding mechanism itself is unremarkable — ManTech has bankrolled dozens of AM standardization and qualification efforts since America Makes' founding in 2012 — but the scale and the explicit focus on supplier qualification, rather than materials research or machine development, signals where the Pentagon thinks the AM bottleneck currently sits: not in whether the technology works, but in whether the acquisition system trusts it enough to buy from a broader set of vendors.
