Prusa Research has released Prusament PLA ColorMix, a filament system that borrows a trick from your office inkjet printer to squeeze dozens of colors out of a handful of spools. Announced on the company's blog on September 8, 2026 by Barbora Maršíková, the release centers on five translucent filaments — cyan, magenta, yellow, white, and black — that Prusa's slicing software can layer and blend to produce, according to the company, up to 45 distinct color shades.
How Halftoning Replaces the Color Wheel
Traditional multi-material 3D printing treats color the way a box of crayons does: each spool is a fixed hue, and blending means physically mixing filament in the hotend or accepting hard color transitions layer by layer. ColorMix takes a different approach, borrowed directly from two-dimensional printing. Prusa calls it "Halftoning," describing it as the same method used in CMYK inkjet printing, where colors are printed from just cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink laid down in a varying pattern of dots that tricks the eye into perceiving continuous color and tone rather than discrete dots.
Applied to filament, that means the printer alternates between cyan, magenta, yellow, white, and black material by layer (or partial layer), rather than mixing colors in the nozzle. Because the filaments are translucent rather than opaque, light passes through the thin layers and the colors stack optically — Prusa notes that in a 1:1 ratio of two colors, the blend is convincing enough that it's difficult to tell the print apart from a purpose-dyed filament. The result, Prusa says, is a palette of up to 45 shades generated entirely in software from the five base spools, including roughly 20 grayscale variations achievable by combining just the black and white filaments with both glitter variants, without touching the color channels at all.
The bundle also includes Gold Glitter and Silver Glitter variants, which extend the effect into metallic-flecked finishes rather than flat color.
Two Bundles, Two Use Cases
Prusa is shipping the system as two distinct products. The headline item is the Prusament PLA ColorMix bundle: seven 1 kg spools (the five CMYW-plus-black translucent filaments, plus the two glitter variants) priced at $209.99, or 180.49 EUR. A second, simpler bundle — Prusament PLA CMYK — trades the translucent five-color approach for three opaque filaments (cyan, magenta, and yellow) plus a spool of Prusament PLA Pristine White, sold as four 1 kg spools for $143.99. Prusa's own materials note that makers who want a full CMYK-with-black set should add a spool of ColorMix Black separately, since the CMYK bundle itself doesn't include one. Individual spools of either line are available separately at $32.99 per kilogram for makers who already own some of the colors or want to replace a single spool rather than rebuy the set.
The opaque CMYK bundle appears aimed at users who want conventional multi-color prints without the translucency and light-blending behavior of the halftoned ColorMix line — a more straightforward color system for parts where flat, opaque color separation matters more than gradient blending.
Print Settings and Hardware Requirements
Because the halftoning effect depends on fine, precise layering, Prusa specifies tight parameters for the translucent filaments: a maximum layer height of 0.15 mm, with 0.1 mm called out as the optimal setting for the best color resolution. The company also recommends a light 5–10% gyroid infill, which presumably helps maintain consistent light transmission through the part's interior rather than creating dense pockets that would throw off the optical blending on thinner-walled prints.
ColorMix isn't compatible with just any multi-material Prusa setup. Per the blog post, the Prusa XL+ Five-head and the MMU3 (Multi Material Unit 3) unlock the option of adding the black filament and mixing the full five-color CMYWK palette, which is what produces the 45-shade range. CORE-family printers fitted with the Bondtech INDX upgrade get a more limited version of the system, adding three extra colors rather than the full five-way blend. That split makes sense given that halftoning depends on the printer being able to rapidly and precisely swap between multiple filament feeds within a single print, and Prusa's higher-end multi-toolhead systems can do that more extensively than the CORE line can with the INDX add-on alone. Prusa is pairing the filament release with corresponding software support in PrusaSlicer and EasyPrint, presumably to handle the halftone pattern generation and color-to-shade mapping that make the whole system work without manual G-code tuning.
What It Means for Makers
For anyone running an MMU3, an XL+, or a CORE-family printer with the Bondtech INDX upgrade, ColorMix effectively multiplies the return on a multi-material investment. Instead of stocking a rainbow of individual color spools — an expensive and shelf-space-hungry proposition — a maker can carry five (or seven, with the glitter options) spools and let software-driven halftoning generate dozens of intermediate shades on demand. That's a meaningfully different economic proposition than buying, say, 20 individual color spools to hit a similar range: at $32.99 per kilogram, the seven-spool ColorMix bundle at $209.99 works out to almost exactly $30/kg, a modest bundle discount of roughly 9% off the per-spool price, but the real savings comes from not needing to buy and store a full spectrum of pre-colored filament in the first place.
The tradeoff is print time and complexity. Halftoning by definition requires frequent filament changes — layer by layer or more often — which on an MMU-style system means added purge waste and print duration compared to a single-material print. Makers chasing large, fast, single-color parts won't find much here; this is squarely aimed at display pieces, figurines, and color-critical prints where the visual payoff of blended, gradient-capable color outweighs the time cost. The 0.15 mm layer height ceiling (with 0.1 mm recommended) also means ColorMix prints will run on the slower, finer-detail end of typical FDM settings, another factor to weigh against straightforward multi-color part production.
It's also worth noting that Prusa itself frames ColorMix specifically as a color-blending tool built for gradient and shade work, distinct from the flat, opaque color separation the CMYK bundle is meant for. Makers already happy with standard opaque multi-color printing on their MMU setups may find the CMYK bundle a more directly useful — and cheaper — upgrade than the translucent halftoning line, depending on whether gradient blending or straightforward opaque color separation better fits their typical prints.
